SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo man was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on Aug. 14 after he allegedly shot at two women before shooting himself in the head.
According to court records filed within Tom Green County, San Angelo Police Department officers were dispatched to the River Pointe Apartments on Benedict Drive at approximately 2:46 a.m. on March 2 regarding a shooting victim. Upon arriving at the scene, one officer spoke with a witness, who stated that they saw a “pool of blood and blood spatter” as well as a handgun next to a vehicle in the complex’s parking lot.
The officer told an SAPD detective that a man, later identified as 41-year-old Nathan Burnett, had shot himself and left the scene on foot prior to the arrival of law enforcement. The officer also stated that blood droplets were observed on a nearby sidewalk leading eastward.
The investigator then learned from two victims that Burnett had discharged a gun at a vehicle they were inside. An SAPD officer noted that the back windshield of the vehicle the victims were in was shattered.

The officer stated that a witness said they “heard a ‘pop’ sound” outside their apartment and saw one of the two victims reversing the vehicle and driving away. The witness also told the officer that they saw Burnett shoot himself with a handgun and fall over next to a parked vehicle in a parking lot. The witness then saw Burnett leave the scene and observed a “blood trail on the sidewalk going east.”
The officer told the detective that they observed “a blood trail leading east, glass fragments on the ground and a handgun lying on [the] ground near blood on the ground near a parked vehicle.” The officer said they had secured the crime scene upon arriving in the area while other responding officers went to look for Burnett and speak with other witnesses.
The investigator spoke with the first victim, who stated that she was in a dating relationship with Burnett. The detective then reviewed text messages sent between the first victim and Burnett, discovering that Burnett had sent the victim “several text messages threatening to shoot himself” just before he shot at the two victims. A photo found on the first victim’s cell phone showed Burnett “pointing a handgun at his head.”
The woman told the investigator that she was dropping off a relative at her apartment and that Burnett continued texting her, “stating that he was going to shoot himself in the head.” She stated that she was in the vehicle with her relative when she heard “a loud pop” and her back windshield shattering. She said that she was not injured and was able to reverse her car and leave the scene, returning after law enforcement arrived.

She stated that she heard the gunshot and the back window shattering, adding that she saw Burnett “banging on the vehicle window.” The second victim also reported that, while the vehicle reversed out of the parking lot to flee, she heard a second gunshot and saw Burnett fall over.
Burnett was located “inside a residence a few miles from the initial scene.” It was learned that he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head but was still conscious and breathing, and he was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment.
According to the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office inmate roster, Burnett was booked into the Tom Green County Jail at 1:47 p.m. on Aug. 14. As of the time of publication, he remains there and is faced with one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and another charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
